How Your Shark Diving Experience Begins

Your shark diving adventure starts the moment you’re picked up from Cape Town, Hermanus, or nearby areas — or, if you prefer, you can drive directly to our headquarters in Kleinbaai, near Gansbaai. Upon arrival at White Shark Projects’ Headquarters, you’ll be greeted by our friendly crew and treated to a delicious continental breakfast before the day’s adventure begins. Guests can use our changing and bathroom facilities to get ready for the dive.

Before departure, our marine biologist will discuss current shark sightings and the conditions for the day. You’ll then complete an indemnity form, receive a comprehensive safety briefing, and gear up with life jackets before heading to the harbor.

Awaiting you is our pride and joy — the ‘Shark Team’, a custom-built 36-foot, 4-ton white shark dive catamaran, designed specifically for shark cage diving excellence. With a limited capacity of 20 passengers and 5 crew, your comfort, viewing pleasure, and personal safety are always our top priorities.

Meet your skipper, dive master, and marine biologist, who will be by your side throughout the trip. Our crew will explain how White Shark Projects works with sharks in their natural environment and guide you through every step — ensuring you understand not only what we do, but why we do it.

As the Day Unfolds

Once on-site, the excitement builds. The crew begins ‘chumming’ the water — a safe, eco-conscious method used to attract sharks near the boat. You’ll feel your heart race as the first dorsal fin cuts through the surface — a thrilling moment that never gets old.

As the sharks grow comfortable, the steel diving cage is carefully lowered into the water. Groups of 4–6 guests take turns entering the cage, spending 20–30 minutes face-to-face with these magnificent predators. Depending on the conditions, guests often have the opportunity for two separate dives during the trip.

Above water, the action continues — Great White Sharks are known for their spectacular “spy-hopping” and breaching behavior, leaping from the ocean in pursuit of prey. For photographers and spectators, topside viewing offers jaw-dropping moments and unforgettable photo opportunities.

By the time you return to shore, you’ll have a new appreciation for these powerful, misunderstood creatures — and a once-in-a-lifetime story to tell.

Sharks & Marine Life You May Encounter

During your adventure, you could encounter:

• 🦈 Great White Sharks – the iconic apex predators, often seen feeding or cruising near the surface.

• 🟤 Bronze Whaler (Copper) Sharks – sleek, fast-moving hunters with a metallic bronze shimmer.

• 🦭 Cape Fur Seals – playful and curious, often seen around the boat.

• 🐠 Stingrays and other marine species – gliding gracefully along the sea floor.

Each trip is unique — sightings vary depending on season, conditions, and natural marine movement.

Exclusions

Please note that the following are not included:
❌ Transport to and from Gansbaai (can be arranged upon request)
❌ Personal travel insurance
❌ Meals beyond light refreshments
❌ Souvenirs and optional media packages

What to Bring

• Towel and warm clothes for after your dive
• Sunscreen and sunglasses
• A hat or beanie (depending on season)
• Sea-sickness tablets (if prone to motion sickness)
• Camera or GoPro (optional)
• A sense of adventure and curiosity!

What to Wear

Dress comfortably — layered clothing is best. Bring:

• A light windbreaker or jacket for the sea breeze

• Flip-flops or waterproof shoes

• Swimwear to wear under your wetsuit

Skill Level

No scuba experience is required!
Our cage floats on the surface, and participants are never more than half a meter below water level. This makes shark cage diving safe, easy, and beginner-friendly — ideal for families, first-time divers, and wildlife enthusiasts alike.
